New Co-op HQ Wins Sustainability Award With YorPower Generators
The Co-op’s new headquarters building in the centre of Manchester, England, has won the prestigious Sustainability Award at the 2012 North West Business Insider Property Awards.
Recognising businesses or public sector organisations which have excelled in the field of sustainability this award demonstrates that the new building and its power system is truly ground breaking, particularly in terms of its environmental credentials.
The entire complex has been designed to deliver a 50% reduction in energy consumption compared to the Co-op’s old Manchester complex and an 80% reduction in carbon. This will lead to a reduction in operating costs of up to a third.
The building is powered by a pure plant oil fed Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system and will utilise rapeseed oil which is grown on The Co-operative’s own farm land.
The power system includes two specially built YorPower 1,000kVA MTU standby diesel generators that synchronise with the CHP system. Excess energy is supplied back to the grid and utilised by the wider development with waste energy being sent through an absorption chiller and used to cool the building.
YorPower worked closely with the Co-op’s contractors throughout the project to deliver on all aspects of fuel consumption, noise attenuation, safety and the new building’s aesthetic appeal.
