YorPower has been selected to supply standby generators for the huge new Co-op headquarters building currently under construction by the company in the centre of Manchester, UK. The new building is part of an £800 million development by the Co-op of a 20 acre city centre site that will provide four million sq ft of office, retail, residential and leisure space when completed.

The new headquarters building will provide 400,000 sq ft of office space and is one of the largest private development projects in the north of England. Ninety different companies will employ 4,000 workers on the site. YorPower’s client, Rotary North West, is part of Rotary UK, a leading national provider of integrated mechanical and electrical building services.

YorPower will supply and install two 1,000KVA MTU standby generators that will synchronise with CHP (combined heat and power) generators fuelled with biodiesel that will provide the buildings needs through a smart grid.

The generators will be installed on the ground floor of the new building with special aesthetic fail safe panels to disguise the exhaust outlets when not in use.

Each generator will be built and designed by YorPower engineers to meet the demanding specification laid down by Rotary North West. Following installation a team of specialist YorPower engineers will carry out on site testing to ensure the generators automatically start up and accept the load if the main supply fails.

The system designed by YorPower includes a fire safety fuel dumping facility and a special fire damping arrangement to insulate the plant room in case of fire. The new building is due for completion in October 2012.
